Spiritual growth is more than accumulating sermons, notes and experiences. Truth has matured within us when it shapes our conduct and can be faithfully passed to others.
Hebrews confronts believers who had received enough truth to become teachers but had remained dependent upon spiritual milk.
Growth turns hearing into practice
Maturity comes through senses trained by use. The Word must be obeyed, tested in daily life and allowed to govern decisions.
Growth produces discernment
Mature believers learn to distinguish good from evil, truth from error and spiritual substance from religious appearance. Discernment is developed through Scripture and obedient practice.
Growth accepts responsibility for others
Paul told Timothy to entrust truth to faithful people who would teach others also. Kingdom growth multiplies through disciples who become disciple-makers.
Teach from formation, not performance
We do not share truth to display knowledge. We teach with humility from what Christ has worked into our lives, pointing people to Him rather than creating dependence upon ourselves.
Put the teaching into practice
- Choose one truth you are intentionally practicing.
- Share it clearly with one person this week.
- Help that person apply it rather than merely admire it.
Personal reflection
- What truth have I heard but not practiced?
- Who am I helping to grow?
- Can others see the fruit of what I teach in my life?
