Genesis 1:26–31; 2:7–25; Psalm 8; Acts 17:24–28

Human beings are created in God’s image to live in fellowship with Him, steward His world, and reflect His character in creation.

THE TEACHING

The opening pages of Scripture reveal a God who creates with purpose. The world is not an accident, and human life is not meaningless. God makes humanity in His image and likeness. This gives every person dignity that cannot be earned, removed, or measured by status, ability, wealth, or usefulness.

Being made in God’s image also gives humanity a calling. Adam and Eve are placed in the garden to serve and keep it. They are to exercise authority as God’s representatives, under God’s authority and in harmony with His good order. Biblical dominion is never permission for selfish exploitation. It is responsible care that reflects the Creator’s generosity and wisdom.

The garden also shows that human life is meant to be lived in God’s presence. God speaks, provides, gives boundaries, and shares fellowship with people. Work, relationship, worship, and obedience belong together. God’s command is not an attempt to restrict human flourishing; it protects life within the goodness of His rule. From the beginning, humanity is called to trust God’s word.

Sin later fractures this calling, but it does not erase the image of God. Every person remains worthy of love and justice. In Christ, God begins restoring what sin damaged and renewing His people to reflect Jesus. Christian discipleship therefore includes worship and personal holiness, but also the way we treat people, care for creation, work honestly, and serve our neighbours.

CANA RESPONSE

Honor the image of God in the people around you. Take responsibility for the work and relationships God has placed in your care. Practice gratitude for creation and obedience to the Creator.

REFLECT

  1. What dignity does every person possess as God’s image-bearer?
  2. Where has God entrusted you with responsibility?
  3. How can your daily work reflect God’s character?

CLOSING PRAYER

Creator God, thank You for making me in Your image and giving my life purpose. Teach me to walk in fellowship with You, to honor others, and to care faithfully for what You have entrusted to me. Restore Your image in me through Jesus. Amen.
