The will is not the route.

“That ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.”Colossians 1:9–10

There is an important difference between knowing God’s will and knowing His entire route.

Paul prayed that believers would be filled with the knowledge of God’s will. He then connected this knowledge to a life that increasingly knows God. The knowledge of His will grows through an increasing knowledge of God Himself.

THE DESTINATION WITHOUT THE MAP

God may reveal what He has called you to do without explaining exactly how you will get there. He may give you a destination without giving you a complete map.

When God called Abraham, He said, “Go… unto a land that I will shew thee.” God did not provide the complete itinerary. Abraham received a promise and a command to walk. Further revelation came as he obeyed.

HE GAVE THEM HIMSELF

Jesus followed the same pattern with His disciples. He did not give Peter a five-year plan or explain every future difficulty to Matthew. He simply said, “Follow me.” He gave them something greater than a detailed route—He gave them Himself.

If God revealed the entire route, we could begin trusting the plan instead of trusting Him. God often gives enough light for the next step and enough mystery to keep us dependent upon Him.

REVELATION WHILE WALKING

Revelation frequently comes while we are walking—not before we begin walking. Some instructions only become clear after obedience has begun. Do not postpone today’s obedience while waiting for tomorrow’s instructions.

TODAY’S REFLECTION

Are you refusing to take the next step because God has not shown you the entire journey? Perhaps God has already made His will clear, but you are waiting for Him to explain every detail.

Faith does not require complete visibility. Faith requires confidence in the One who is leading. The more you know Him, the more clearly you recognize His will. The more you trust Him, the less you need the whole map.

He may not show you the entire way because He is calling you to follow the Way—Jesus Christ.

Prayer

Father, fill me with the knowledge of Your will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding. Increase my knowledge of You so that I may recognize Your voice and follow Your leading. Deliver me from the need to understand everything before I obey. Give me faith for the next step and grace to trust You with the steps I cannot yet see. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
