The battle against discouragement.
Never assume that because God used you yesterday, you cannot be discouraged today. A calling does not make you immune to exhaustion—but discouragement does not have the authority to cancel your calling.1 KINGS 18–19
Discouragement can come after great victory. Elijah had just witnessed the power of God on Mount Carmel, yet soon afterward he was exhausted, afraid, and sitting beneath a tree. Even strong servants of God face seasons when their strength feels small.
When the journey feels too long
Israel became discouraged because of the way. God was still with them and His promise had not changed, but the road had become difficult. You prayed—and you are still waiting. You obeyed—and the battle continued. A difficult road does not mean you are on the wrong road.
Quiet the catastrophic noise
Elijah experienced the wind, the earthquake and the fire, but the Lord drew his attention to the still, small voice. God brings us into stillness so we can hear His quiet whisper again.
Do not quit before the harvest
Discouragement whispers, “Stop.” Faith says, “Keep going.” There is a due season attached to faithful obedience. Do not make a permanent decision in a temporary season of discouragement.
Courage is obedience in the presence of fear
Courage is praying through tears and still taking the next step because God said, “Go.” Its foundation is not confidence in yourself, but confidence in the presence of God.
Get up again
Elijah’s story did not end beneath the tree. God fed him, allowed him to rest, spoke to him again, reminded him that he was not alone, and gave him another assignment. Rest if you need to rest. Pray until the noise settles. Listen for His voice again. Then get up and keep going.
Prayer
Father, meet me in every place of weariness and discouragement. Quiet the noise around me and within me so I can hear Your voice again. Renew my strength, anchor me in Your presence, and give me courage to take the next faithful step. By Your grace, I will get up again. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
