Alive, but still bound.
“The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, ‘Unbind him, and let him go.’”John 11:43–44
Lazarus came out of the tomb alive—but he was still wearing the evidence of where he had been.
Jesus gave him life instantly, yet the grave clothes had to be removed afterward. Receiving new life and learning to walk in freedom can be different stages of God’s work.
LIFE CAME BEFORE FREEDOM
A person can genuinely belong to Christ and still need freedom from fear, shame, destructive habits, painful memories, and false identities. Those remaining struggles do not mean that Christ’s work is unreal. They may simply be grave clothes—remnants of a former condition that no longer defines the person wearing them.
Do not mistake what someone is still wearing for who Christ has made them.
THE COMMUNITY HAS A RESPONSIBILITY
Lazarus did not remove his own grave clothes. Jesus instructed the people around him: “Unbind him, and let him go.”
God places us in spiritual community because some freedoms are experienced through prayer, encouragement, truth, discipleship, accountability, and loving relationships. The Church cannot give resurrection life—only Jesus can do that—but the Church must help resurrected people learn to walk freely.
LET HIM GO
Jesus did not say, “Unbind him and keep him under observation.” He said, “Let him go.”
Freedom is not complete when the grave is empty but the grave clothes remain. Jesus did not call you out merely to survive outside the tomb. He called you out to walk in the liberty of your new life.
MONDAY REFLECTION
What grave clothes from your former life are you still carrying? Are fear, shame, rejection, bitterness, or old patterns trying to identify you? Has God placed someone around you who needs compassionate help removing what no longer belongs to them?
TODAY’S ACTION
Identify one grave cloth that must come off. Bring it honestly before God, then take one practical step toward freedom. If necessary, ask a mature believer to pray and walk with you.
I am alive in Christ. My former condition no longer defines me. Every grave cloth is coming off, and I will walk in the freedom Jesus has given me.
Prayer
Father, thank You for the resurrection life I have received through Jesus Christ. Help me recognize everything I am still carrying that belongs to my former condition. Remove fear, shame, bondage, destructive habits, and every false identity from my life. Surround me with people who will speak truth, pray faithfully, and help me walk in freedom. Make me compassionate toward others who are alive in Christ but are still being unbound. By the authority of Jesus Christ, I receive grace to leave the grave behind and walk freely in the new life You have given me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
