THE TEACHING

Jesus began His ministry with an announcement: the time is fulfilled, the kingdom of God has come near, so repent and believe the Gospel. The kingdom is God’s royal rule—the active reign by which He rescues, judges evil, restores life, and brings people under the lordship of His Son. It is not merely a place we go after death, nor can it be reduced to a political program.

Jesus’ words and works reveal the kingdom. He forgives sinners, heals the sick, casts out demons, welcomes the excluded, and teaches the way of God. These signs do not mean every consequence of the fall has already disappeared. They show that God’s promised reign has broken into history through Jesus. The cross is the decisive victory over sin and the powers of darkness; the resurrection declares Jesus Lord.

The kingdom is present, but not yet complete. Christ reigns, and the Church serves as a witness to His reign, but we still await the day when every enemy is defeated and every knee acknowledges Jesus. This tension keeps us from triumphalism and despair. We work and pray for justice, healing, and peace without claiming that human effort can bring the kingdom in its fullness.

To seek first the kingdom is to place Jesus’ authority above our preferences. It shapes how we use money, exercise influence, treat neighbors, and respond to conflict. The Church proclaims the King and demonstrates the values of His reign through holiness, mercy, truth, and sacrificial love.

CANA RESPONSE

Ask where your habits resist Christ’s rule. Submit that area to Him, and take one practical step that reflects the values of His kingdom.

REFLECT

  1. How did Jesus’ ministry reveal the kingdom?
  2. What does “already and not yet” help us understand?
  3. What part of your life needs to come more fully under Christ’s reign?

CLOSING PRAYER

King Jesus, Your kingdom has come near in Your life, death, and resurrection. Rule in my heart and among Your people. Make us faithful witnesses until Your reign is seen in fullness. Amen.
