THE TEACHING
Jesus calls His disciples the salt of the earth and the light of the world. This is a public calling. The Church is not meant to hide its faith, but neither is it called to seek attention for its own sake. Our good works should direct people to the Father. The aim is that Christ becomes visible through a people whose lives reflect His truth and mercy.
Jeremiah told the exiles in Babylon to build homes, plant gardens, raise families, and seek the welfare of the city where they lived. They were not to confuse their identity with the surrounding culture, but they were to pray and work for the good of their neighbors. This gives the Church a pattern for living faithfully in a society that may not share our faith: be distinct in worship and conduct, and actively seek the good of others.
Paul’s engagement in Athens shows both discernment and courage. He listened to the culture around him, found a point of contact, and proclaimed the living God and the risen Jesus. Christians can engage public life with conviction and respect. Scripture also teaches honor toward governing authorities, while the whole Bible makes clear that obedience to human authority is never ultimate; God alone is Lord.
Peter calls believers to honorable conduct among the nations, and Titus urges them to be ready for every good work, gentle, peaceable, and devoted to doing what is good. The Church’s witness includes words and deeds: proclaiming the Gospel, serving the vulnerable, pursuing peace, telling the truth, and refusing contempt.
