THE TEACHING

Israel’s identity begins with deliverance. God hears the cries of His people in Egypt, remembers His covenant, and brings them out by His mighty hand. At Sinai, He gives them His law and calls them a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. The order matters: God rescues them before He instructs them. Obedience is a response to grace, not a payment for redemption.

The law teaches Israel how to live as a people belonging to God. It orders worship, protects the vulnerable, restrains injustice, and forms a community that reflects God’s character. Israel is not called to be set apart so that they can boast over other peoples. They are set apart to represent the Lord and make His ways visible.

Israel’s story also reveals the seriousness of covenant unfaithfulness. The people repeatedly turn to idols and injustice. The prophets call them back, warning that religious activity cannot replace repentance and righteousness. God disciplines His people, yet He remains faithful and promises restoration. The history of Israel teaches both the holiness of God and the depth of His mercy.

In Christ, the people of God include all who are joined to Him by faith. Peter applies Israel’s calling to the Church: a chosen people called to proclaim God’s excellencies. The Church must therefore resist both pride and assimilation. We do not withdraw from our neighbours, nor do we copy every value around us. We live visibly under God’s rule, practicing worship, integrity, mercy, and justice.

CANA RESPONSE

Let gratitude for redemption lead your obedience. Ask whether your private conduct and community life reflect the holiness, compassion, and justice of God.

REFLECT

  1. Why does Israel’s redemption come before the giving of the law?
  2. What does it mean for God’s people to represent Him?
  3. How can the Church be present in society without losing its distinct calling?

CLOSING PRAYER

Lord, thank You for redeeming a people for Your name. Teach me to obey from gratitude, to care for the vulnerable, and to represent Your character with humility and courage. Amen.
